The bee project in El Silencio Natural Reserve has been running since November 2022 and is a joint project of Fundacion Biodiversa Colombia and Yiehitson Correa, an expert in bee management. The primary aim of the project is to set up and manage multiple apiaries and stingless bee stations within the reserve for the production of honey, beeswax and propolis. This is part of our strategy to generate nature friendly sources of income that contribute to the financial sustainability of the reserve.

El proyecto de abejas en la Reserva Natural El Silencio se ejecuta desde noviembre de 2022 y es un proyecto conjunto entre Fundación Biodiversa Colombia y Yiehitson Correa, experto en manejo de abejas. El objetivo principal del proyecto es establecer y gestionar múltiples colmenas y estaciones de abejas sin aguijón dentro de la reserva para la producción de miel, cera de abejas y propóleo. Esto es parte de nuestra estrategia para generar fuentes de ingresos amigables con la naturaleza que contribuyan a la sostenibilidad financiera de la reserva.

Nature friendly – Amistosa de la naturaleza

A core principle of our beekeeping is that we aim to not introduce novel species or genetic variation into the reserve. The bees that we keep are therefore colonies that establish themselves in our species bee traps, or that we rescue from situations that will likely damage a colony, for example, from a fallen tree. The bee traps are either made from plastic bottles or from plastic buckets.

Un principio fundamental de nuestra api y meliponicultura es que no introducimos nuevas especies o variaciones genéticas en la reserva. Las abejas que criamos son, por tanto, colonias que se establecen en trampas para abejas de nuestras especies locales, o que rescatamos de situaciones que probablemente dañaría la colonia, por ejemplo, de un árbol caído. Las trampas para abejas están hechas de botellas de plástico recicladas o de baldes de plástico reciclado.

Conservation honey that is free of agrochemicals – Miel de conservación libre de agroquímicos

Our bees forage for pollen, nectar and resins in different areas of El Silencio Natural Reserve. The use of pesticides and herbicides is prohibited in the reserve, ensuring that bee products and products derived from Meliponiculture are free of agrochemical residues. Our bees are also playing an important role pollinating the flowers of plants and trees in the reserve, stimulating seed production and natural regeneration of the vegetation. El Silencio Natural Reserve is a mixture of old growth tropical forest, recovering forest and former cattle grazing lands in the first stages of recovery of one of the most diverse and threatened ecosystems in Colombia. Our bees play their role in this natural recuperation. The sale of honey from the reserve therefore directly supports nature restoration and conservation. Consumers of our honey can not only feel good that they support conservation of a critical ecosystem, but can also rest assured that they are not ingesting more agrochemicals.

Nuestras abejas buscan polen, néctar y resinas en diferentes áreas de la Reserva Natural El Silencio. En la reserva está prohibido el uso de pesticidas y herbicidas, asegurando que los productos apícolas y derivados de la Meliponicultura sean libres de residuos de agroquímicos. Nuestras abejas también juegan un papel importante polinizando las flores de las plantas y árboles de la reserva, estimulando la producción de semillas y la regeneración natural de la vegetación. La Reserva Natural El Silencio es una mezcla de bosque tropical antiguo, bosque joven en recuperación y antiguas tierras de pastoreo de ganado en las primeras etapas de recuperación de uno de los ecosistemas más diversos y amenazados de Colombia. Nuestras abejas desempeñan su papel en esta recuperación natural. Por lo tanto, la venta de miel de la reserva apoya directamente la restauración y conservación de la naturaleza. Los consumidores de nuestra miel no sólo pueden sentirse bien por apoyar la conservación de un ecosistema crítico, sino que también pueden estar seguros de que no están ingiriendo más agroquímicos.

Secretos del Silencio

We are interested in all species of bees. Some bees, like Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifera) and Melipona bees (e.g. Boca de sapo), produce large volumes of honey. These species are very important to us. Other species like Friesiomelitta spp. are much less well known, and have been revealing their secrets to us. Unlike in honey bees, stingless bee honey and pollen is fermented, lowering the overall sugar content, and adding probiotic qualities to the honey, which may have additional health benefits. Probably due to this fermentation process, Friesiomelitta honey and pollen are a favourite of many of us in the reserve with its delicate and exquisite citrus taste. It deserves to be a Colombian delicacy! As such, we cherish every new species that finds its way into our bee project, as we can bear witness to the intimate details of its colony life, as well as enjoy the unique flavours of honey and pollen that they offer.

Nos interesan todas las especies de abejas. Algunas abejas, como las abejas africanizadas (Apis mellifera) y las abejas meliponas (por ejemplo, “Boca de sapo”, Melipona eburnea), producen grandes volúmenes de miel. Estas especies son muy importantes para nosotros. Otras especies como Frieseomelitta spp. son mucho menos conocidas y nos han ido revelando sus secretos. A diferencia de las abejas melíferas, la miel y el polen de las abejas sin aguijón se fermentan, lo que reduce el contenido general de azúcar y agrega cualidades probióticas a la miel, lo que podría tener beneficios adicionales para la salud. Probablemente debido a este proceso de fermentación, la miel y el polen de Frieseomelitta son los favoritos de muchos de nosotros en la reserva por su delicado y exquisito sabor cítrico. ¡Merece ser un manjar colombiano! De la misma manera, apreciamos cada nueva especie que llega a nuestro proyecto de abejas, ya que podemos ser testigos de los detalles íntimos de la vida de su colonia, así como disfrutar de los sabores únicos de la miel y el polen que ofrecen.

Community – Comunidad

Yiehitson Correa is a zootechnician and a self-taught bee expert. Dissatisfied with the focus on livestock farming and its negative environmental impact in the field of animal husbandry, Yiehitson was drawn to beekeeping and meliponiculture, especially the latter, native stingless bees. He learned Portuguese during undergrad with the intention of travelling to Brazil to continue his graduate studies and discover the world of native stingless bees. This motivated him even more to continue improving the Portuguese language to be able to access the wealth of information about the breeding of native stingless bees that has been established in Brazil. At El Silencio, Yiehitson works with two of our reserve rangers: Noel and Lucho. They were both drawn to bees because of their love of nature, as well as their previous experience with artisanal beekeeping. In the future, once the bee project is well established, we aim to involve more rangers as well as people from neighbouring communities.

Yiehitson Correa es zootecnista y un experto en abejas autodidacta. Insatisfecho con el enfoque en la cría de ganado y su impacto ambiental negativo en el campo de la cría de animales, Yiehitson se sintió atraído por la apicultura y la meliponicultura, en especial por esta última, las abejas nativas sin aguijón. Aprendió português durante el pregrado con la intención de viajar a Brasil a seguir con sus estudios de posgrado y al descubrir el mundo de las abejas nativas sin aguijón, esto lo motivó mucho más a seguir mejorando el idioma portugues para poder acceder a la gran cantidad de información sobre la cría de abejas nativas sin aguijón que se ha producido en Brasil. En El Silencio, Yiehitson trabaja con dos de nuestros guardabosques de la reserva: Noel y Lucho. Ambos se sintieron atraídos por las abejas por su amor por la naturaleza, así como su experiencia previa con la apicultura artesanal. En el futuro, una vez que el proyecto de las abejas esté bien establecido, nuestro objetivo es involucrar a más guardabosques, así como a personas de las comunidades vecinas.

Research – Investigación

Most of the native stingless bees that we are now rearing successfully are difficult to identify with certainty to the species level. As far as we know it is possible that there may be species in the reserve that are new to science. In addition, it is likely that for many species we are rearing, research on various aspects of bee biology is not yet well documented. We realise that our collection of bee species in boxes, and our data on natural bee nests in the reserve could therefore be of great value for scientific research. While we do not conduct scientific research on our bees ourselves, we are always eager to know more about the bees we work with. La mayoría de las abejas nativas sin aguijón que ahora estamos criando con éxito son difíciles de identificar con certeza a nivel de especie. Hasta donde sabemos, es posible que haya especies en la reserva que sean nuevas para la ciencia. Además, es probable que, para muchas especies que criamos, la investigación sobre diversos aspectos de la biología de las abejas aún no esté bien documentada. Sabemos que nuestra colección de especies de abejas en cajas y nuestros datos sobre los nidos de abejas naturales en la reserva podrían ser muy valiosos para la investigación científica.
